World Kindness Day: Building a Culture of Care in Construction
World Kindness Day reminds us that small acts of compassion can create ripples of positive change. In an industry often characterised by tight deadlines, physical demands, and high-pressure environments, creating a supportive culture isn’t just a nice-to-have – it’s essential for building sustainable, healthy workplaces and thriving communities.
At LPL Construction Services, care and compassion underpin everything we do. It’s embedded in how we support our teams, engage with our communities, and build lasting partnerships. As we mark World Kindness Day 2025, we’re reflecting on the tangible ways we’re creating this culture – both within our organisation and in the communities where we work.
Mental Health: A Priority, Not an Afterthought
Construction has historically struggled with mental health challenges. The industry sees higher rates of stress, anxiety, and isolation than many other sectors – which is why we’ve made mental wellbeing a cornerstone of our employee support strategy.
Our Mental Health Commitment:
- 7 trained Mental Health First Aiders across our 130-strong team – that’s 1 per 15 employees, and we’re targeting 1 per 12 by the end of 2025
- Partnership with Lighthouse Club, the construction industry charity providing free, confidential 24/7 support to all LPL staff and subcontractors
- 217 hours of mental health training delivered in 2024 alone, including:
- 112 people trained in Bronze Mental Health First Aid awareness (LPL staff and subcontractors)
- 18 people completing Mental Health Awareness via iHASCO
- 8 managers trained in Mental Health for Managers
- 17 site operatives completing Construction Mental Health training
But we don’t stop at training. We provide:
- Bespoke counselling services tailored to individual requirements, paid for by LPL to support long-term wellbeing
- Free 24-hour confidential GP service for all PAYE employees ensuring early diagnosis and support
- Monthly meditation and mindfulness sessions open to all at no cost, led by a trained local practitioner
- Employee Assistance Scheme offering wider support on topics like debt, stress, and family concerns
This isn’t about ticking boxes – it’s about ensuring that every person who works with us, whether directly employed or a subcontractor, knows they’re supported. That someone cares. That asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Investing in People Through Training
Supporting people means investing in their futures. In 2024, we’ve demonstrated that commitment through comprehensive training and development opportunities:
- 849.75 hours of certified training across the business
- 1,133 individual courses completed through our iHASCO platform
- 284 hours dedicated to environmental training – 214 courses completed as we build awareness of our shared responsibility to the planet
- 70 hours of learning through Supply Chain Sustainability School, where we achieved Gold status in 2024
Supporting the Next Generation
Looking beyond today and investing in tomorrow’s workforce is central to our approach. In 2024, we’ve actively worked to inspire and support young people entering construction:
Apprenticeships: We currently employ 2 apprentices – one completing an NVQ in Carpentry at Warrington College (3 days on site, 1 day in college) and one pursuing a University Apprenticeship in Quantity Surveying at Anglia Ruskin University (4 days practical experience, 1 day study release).
Careers Engagement: In September 2024, we participated in the SEND Careers Day hosted by Castleton School at Wat Tyler Country Park. This careers fair welcomed multiple schools across Essex, providing us an excellent opportunity to engage with students and promote career pathways within construction. It was particularly rewarding to speak to students who had observed our work progress from their classrooms and had seen our vans and plant in action.
Essex Construction Alliance: In 2024, LPL became a member of the Essex Construction Alliance, a new group designed to support construction businesses across Essex. With the sector employing over 65,000 people in Essex and set to grow by more than 30% by 2040, this alliance helps businesses overcome barriers such as gender stereotypes, promote entry-level jobs, and offer shadowing opportunities.
Being Great Neighbours
Our responsibility extends beyond our job sites. We’re proud to be active members of the communities where we work, contributing time, resources, and expertise to causes that matter:
£13,489 donated to charitable causes in 2024 – a testament to how community-focused our business is and how our local charities benefit. Our Community Award scheme enables employees to nominate causes close to their hearts, with each receiving £250 in support. In 2024, we supported:
- Sudbury Boxing Club
- Toys and baby clothing for Addenbrookes Hospital patients over festive periods
- Families in Focus
- St Clair Hospice
Volunteering in Action: We supported Castledon School in developing a forestry area, transforming it into a new wellbeing and forest school space for students. This equated to 18 hours of voluntary work with all costs for plant and machinery covered by LPL.
Meet the Buyer Events: In November 2024, our team attended Meet the Buyer at Stansted Airport, engaging with over 100 local suppliers, businesses, and interested parties. These events create opportunities for SMEs and strengthen local economic networks.
A Culture of Care, Every Day
At LPL, compassion and support aren’t confined to a single day. They’re woven into our daily operations:
- Daily project briefings that prioritise open communication
- Weekly toolbox talks ensuring everyone feels heard
- Senior Management Tours – providing direct feedback, guidance, and opportunities for teams to raise concerns
- 240 Health, Safety, and Environmental inspections in 2024 (increasing to 264 in 2025) ensuring our sites are safe, supportive environments
- Back to Work Briefings – company-wide standdown days where all 99 site-based operatives across our Airport and Civil divisions come together to review the year, discuss objectives, ask questions, and trade best practices
Looking Forward
As we reflect on World Kindness Day 2025, we’re proud of the culture we’ve built – but we’re not complacent. Maintaining a supportive, compassionate workplace requires constant attention, investment, and commitment.
Our goals for 2025 include:
- Increasing Mental Health First Aider ratio to 1:12
- Pledging £10,000+ to charitable causes
- Expanding apprenticeship opportunities
- Continuing to support local SMEs and communities
- Further embedding mental health awareness across all levels of our organisation
The Ripple Effect
Compassion in construction creates ripples far beyond individual acts. When we support an employee’s mental health, they bring their best selves to work – creating safer, more productive sites. When we train and develop people, we strengthen the entire industry. When we support local communities and charities, we build stronger, more resilient neighbourhoods.
When we treat supply chain partners fairly and help them succeed, we create economic opportunities that benefit entire regions.
This is the power of building with care – not as a one-day gesture, but as a daily commitment to creating a better future for everyone.
On World Kindness Day and every day, LPL Construction Services remains committed to our people, our partners, and our communities.
