New Roofing System Stansted Airport

The project focused on revamping the existing roof of the Ramp Building adjacent to Stansted’s Terminal and passenger transit train system. The existing roof system was deteriorating, raising concerns about its integrity for the asset owners. LPL was commissioned to design and install a new roofing system that would provide a durable solution for both the airport and the building’s tenants. Scaffolding was erected in compliance with regulations to ensure safe access to the roof, allowing teams to install support bars and over-clad the existing roof with new aluminium panels and insulation. This upgrade improved the building’s U-values, bringing them in line with the current Building Regulations for England and Wales.

During the project, our teams also inspected, repaired, and cleared the existing rainwater system, applying a protective coating to enhance its durability and align it with the new roofing system. A key focus for the delivery team was maintaining regular communication with stakeholders, ensuring tenants were updated daily on progress to minimise disruption to their operations.

Given the Ramp Building’s proximity to the Track Transit System (TTS), a comprehensive risk assessment was conducted, and strict safety measures and containment protocols were implemented to protect the roofing team, passengers, staff, and the ongoing safe operation of the airport. Safety was the top priority.

By addressing all aspects of the roof overhaul—from structural improvements to effective stakeholder communication and robust safety controls—the project successfully achieved its objectives: installing a safe and reliable new roofing system, extending the building’s lifespan, and providing a secure, weatherproof environment for the tenant and their operations.
